Although the temperature is so low in Chicago you can see your breath, serious runners are out for their daily workout.

Marathon runner and author Jeff Galloway runs all year round.

"The secret is layering," Galloway said. "You would put on several layers so that instead of having a thick layer where it's all or nothing, you can peel off the excess layer."

He suggests keeping both your hands and head covered to help retain body heat.

"You lose 70 to 75 percent of the body heat that you'll lose through the top of your head," Galloway said.

While your body may not feel like it is as thirsty as it would be in warmer weather, it is just as important to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

"During the cooler temperatures there's less sweating and therefore less need or less thirst for drinking lots of fluid. But you need to make sure that you're rehydrating afterwards," Galloway said.

If you want to exercise in the cold, bundle up, carry water and be careful running on the snow and ice.
