During the week she's a Norman police officer and on the weekends Jennifer Newell is making sure car seats are safe and snug in backseats.

Newell volunteers with Safe Kids Oklahoma which hosts car seat checks for parents to make sure their seats are installed correctly.

"I have pulled people over when I have seen what I believe is a child who should at least be in a booster seat wandering in the back seat not buckled in in any way," she said.

Newell said car seats can be overwhelming and tricky to install and parents sometimes need a little help.

"It's so much more in depth than what it looks like," she said.

Four out of five car seats are installed wrong, according to Safe Kids Oklahoma.

A car seat improperly installed can have deadly consequences. Parents like Stefanie Lawson said they're grateful the organization sponsors the car seat checks.

"Sometimes the instruction manuals aren't real clear and I would rather have someone who does this regularly that has deal with the seats and cars do it," Lawson said.

The next Safe Kids Oklahoma car seat check is from 3 to 5 p.m. April 4 at the Bass Pro Shop in Bricktown.
