Home sweet home can be costly, so today the Power for your Pocketbook checks out savings  for spring planting and how to get your mortgage paid off sooner.

Are you in the spring of things here are a couple of savings ideas when it comes spring planting-- do it yourself.

  • One idea buy several pots, filling each with blooms of the same color. It will be a great splash of color.  If you are going for a big project like a Japanese water garden, or Koi pond, get about three bids, experts say that should result in the  best deal.

And are you selling your home? A home's landscaping can affect how quickly your house will sell.  Maybe you are trying to pay off your current home loan.

  • Making one extra payment to your mortgage every year is something that can save you thousands of dollars.

On a $200,000 mortgage, 30 year note at 6.5 percent interest, an extra payment a year could cut six years off your mortgage.

Also I have a mortgage calculator to help you see what these numbers are for your situation. Just click on my blog on the Power for Your Pocketbook page and click on the blog entry, Saving money on your mortgage. There is a link to a mortgage calculator in there.
