High school nicknames

My inbox is filled with nicknames on a daily basis. Everyone is trying to come up with what our new NBA team should be called. Suggestions have ranged from the ridiculous (River Otters) to the more ridiculous (Waving Wheat). Nicknames are a beautiful thing, an important thing. The best professional nicknames are unique. The Knickerbockers, The Dodgers, The Yankees, The Metropolitans, The Lakers, The Packers, The Red Sox.

High school nicknames define community pride. We have a tremendous number of Native American nicknames in this state for obvious reasons. In my opinion, the more unique the better.

Anybody can be the Bulldogs or Tigers (no offense to Altus or Norman). But when I say Whippets everyone in the state immediately knows I'm talking about Okeene. I was a "Trojan" in high school (not Jenks). You can imagine the ridicule we took from opposing fans.

My suggestion for Clay Bennett and the boys is to scour the library of high school nicknames in Oklahoma to find their new identity. We have some dandies! Here are a few of my favorites.

Alva Gold Bugs - #1 in Oklahoma high school nickname rankings.
Atoka Wampus Cats - A monster lumberjack cat! Are you kidding me? That is spectacular!
Beaver Dusters - Makes me want a shower.
Bishop Kelley Comets (several schools) - Wouldn't it be awesome to have a daughter named Haley who went there?
Bray-Doyle Donkeys - Stubbornly outstanding.
Cascia Hall Commandos - You would think somebody would do the laundry.
Chickasha Fightin' Chicks - The whole idea of an infantry of baby chickens wearing full armor and going into battle risking feather and wing for the pride of the hometown is exciting to me.
Clinton Red Tornadoes - Classic.
Claremore Zebras - A Claremore fan never changes his stripes.
Dewey Bulldoggers - Awesome. It's like a Bulldog only awesome!
Duncan Demons - Bold. A little on the dark side, but I like it.
Elk City Big Elks - Predictable, but fun to say.
Eufaula Ironheads - I'd give it to the fullback on every play.
Grove Ridge Runners - Living on the edge. My immediate question is who would win between a Ridge Runner and a Road Runner.
Marlow Outlaws (several schools) - Intimidating. You always feel like Jesse James is on their side.
McAlester Buffaloes - This would be a good one Clay.
Miami Wardogs - Seriously, how awesome is that?
Muskogee Roughers - Just sounds tough.
Mustang Broncos - Double the horsepower.
Okeene Whippets - Real Good.
Pawnee Black Bears - Menacing.
Perry (Blackwell) Maroons - Big fan of deep red.
Purcell Dragons - Nothing cooler than breathing fire.
Sand Springs Sandites - Makes me itch.
Sallisaw Black Diamonds - Original.
U.S. Grant Generals - Logical.
Victory Christian Conquerors - Inspirational.
Wilburton Diggers - Not necessarily the highest of aspirations, but cool nonetheless.
Will Rogers Ropers - Clever.
Woodward Boomers - This would be a good one Clay.
Wright City Lumberjax - Always possessing the X-factor
Yukon Millers - I would vote for the Yukon "Friends in Low Places," but "Millers" is pretty good.

* Note - We have an amazing amount of Pirates in this state which is nowhere near the Caribbean.
