HARRAH, Okla. -- A former school librarian appeared in court Monday. Laura Cantrell is being accused of having an affair with a teenage student. Cantrell's attorney claims she--not the teen--is the true victim.
The investigation began in January, when Cantrell claimed that a student was threatening to tell Harrah police that they were having an affair if she didn't pay him $50.
In a sworn statement, a Harrah detective claimed that Cantrell is "sexually promiscuous and seems to befriend the young men of her church and school...."
The 40-year-old Cantrell was arrested on complaints of having a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old male. Her attorney said the teen is not to be trusted.
"He gave them two or three different stories," Mickey Homsey, Cantrell's attorney said. "The young man hasn't lived at home in two or three years and their trying to make him out to look like this poor, young victim. I think there is a little bit more to this story."
The investigation allegedly found text messages Cantrell sent to another teenage boy, who was about to take a shower. A court transcript has Cantrell asking in the text message, "So RU naked yet?" The transcript reports the teen answering, "What R U thinking?" with Cantrell replying, "Like being in the shower with U."
Police looked into claims that Cantrell had sexual relationships with half a dozen other current and former students, but none of those claims panned out.
Cantrell is free after posting a $15,000 bond.
