OKLAHOMA CITY - An Oklahoma City man was arrested on a child abuse complaint after an infant was hospitalized in critical condition.
Jason Day, 24, was arrested Tuesday night after police responded to an unresponsive infant call.
Police believe Day violently shook 5-month-old Natalie Imani, sending her to INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center in critical condition.
A police report stated Day was staying in a mobile home behind a house. It is unclear what, if any, relation Day had to the baby, but he was watching the child when she stopped breathing and the mother was away at work.
Day went to the house for help and the residents started CPR on the child after calling 911. When officers and EMSA arrived to the scene at about 7 p.m. Tuesday, they continued CPR on the baby and took her to the hospital.
"It's unfortunate any time you see somebody get injured at the hands of another, but becomes particularly alarming when it's a small child that's months old," Oklahoma City Police Master Sergeant Gary Knight said.
Natalie had trauma consistent with severe shaking, according to Knight.
A hospital spokeswoman said Natalie remained in critical condition Wednesday evening.
Day remains in jail on a child abuse complaint.
Oklahoma City police said Day was arrested after being interviewed, but that the case is still under investigation.
