UNDATED (AP) -- Tens of thousands of people remain without power in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic in the wake of this week's storm.
The weather system dropped as much of 16 inches of snow from South Carolina to New Hampshire. Power remains out for customers from Virginia to Georgia. One utility reports about 40,000 without service in North and South Carolina. Some of them might not get their lights back on until tomorrow.
With the mercury down to single digits in places, some schools have remained closed for a second day.
In New Jersey, the storm has nearly resulted in a legal storm involving district and school board candidates. Yesterday was the deadline for candidates to register to run in the upcoming school board race. With nearly every New Jersey school closed, many candidates didn't have a place to file.
New Jersey's governor has since announced that the filing deadline would be extended until tomorrow.
