Floods kill 11 people, destroy homes in Haiti

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) -- Haiti has been swamped with flooding rains that have left at least 11 people dead.
   Most of the victims were swept away by swollen rivers or died when their flimsy homes collapsed.
   The rain began a week ago and has been heaviest on the southern peninsula, where 1,000 homes have been flooded. New flood alerts were issued today for all of Haiti's 10 administrative regions.
   Even small amounts of rain can swell rivers and overflow fields in the poor Caribbean nation, which is still recovering from last year's hurricanes.
