Thousands of Oklahoma City families could have their lives, their kids' lives radically changed by the school board next Monday.

The Oklahoma City School board will vote on whether to change the entire district to a year round school year, or continuous learning calendar.

School would start three weeks earlier on August 1 next year. Then in October, two weeks off for fall break. In December, children will have three weeks off for Christmas break. Spring break in March would be two weeks long instead of just one. And finally school would end June 1.

The idea is to limit the long summer stretch kids are away from the classroom, and reduce the amount of learning they forget over that time period.

It's also supposed to give struggling students some tutoring opportunities to catch up during those breaks.

I have to admit, it sounds intriguing, but the summer break is actually only about four weeks shorter. Is it really going to make that big of a difference to students retaining what they've learned?

I'll be interested to hear the school board debate this Monday night.
