WELLSTON, Oklahoma -- Effective Friday, the city of Wellston is shutting down its ambulance service.
The city council made the announcement Thursday night and said it's a financial decision.
Wellston EMS has struggled this year but council members are hoping to come up with way to get it up and running again soon.
Since the city's only ambulance was taken out of service, citizens will have to wait for medics to arrive from Chandler, Shawnee or even Stillwater.
Besides finances, the other big issue for the department was the service area which spans nearly 300 square miles in Lincoln County.
