MIDWEST CITY, Oklahoma – Midwest City police have arrested a man for stealing copper wire from a local business Monday night.

According to police, officers answered an alarm call in the 1100 block of N. Midwest Boulevard and arrested 42-year-old Steven D. Clark after finding him on top of the roof of the business.

Officers said Clark was in possession of burglary tools, marijuana and had caused an estimated $35,000 worth of damage to the air conditioning unit while stealing copper.

Clark also had an outstanding felony warrant out of Oklahoma County.

Clark was taken into custody and is waiting to be booked into the Oklahoma County jail on complaints of larceny of copper, possession of burglary tools and marijuana as well as having a warrant for distribution of a controlled dangerous substance. Clark's bond was set at $29,000.

The alarm atop the business' roof was placed there by Northstar Properties and Investments in a effort to aid law enforcement in cutting down on rooftop HVAC unit burglaries.

"Insurance companies are losing millions of dollars in these types of thefts. In the domino effect, business owners are becoming increasingly frustrated, and rightfully so, because of insurance rates and deductibles they are having to pay," said Midwest City Police Chief Brandon Clabes. "Another aspect that the general public may not understand is that when these copper thieves do their dastardly deeds, they typically cause thousands of dollars in damage for a few hundred dollars worth of copper."
