OKLAHOMA CITY -- Oklahoma City police and fire investigators are trying to rule out foul play in a fire that killed an elderly woman on Christmas Eve.

The fire was first reported around 1 p.m. at 1904 N.E. 29th Street. When firefighters arrived they found heavy smoke pouring from the house.

Fire crews knocked down the fire and began searching the house, but their efforts were hampered by burglar bars on the doors.

"There were bars on all the exterior doors to the structure which did delay us a little bit, but we got through the bars and were able to perform our duties," Battalion Chief Kirk Wright said.

Firefighters located the victim, Allene Jewel Bar, but it was too late to save her.  An autopsy will determine how Bar died.

Investigators don't know yet how the fire started.  They said because of some circumstances surrounding the fire, Oklahoma City police are trying to rule out foul play.
