ENTRY #11:

Chow Time!!!

I'll have a number two with large fries with extra cheese and a diet soda... I'm watching my girlish figure. It's nothing like that. Food is one of the biggest morale boosts, or the biggest let down of the night.

Let me break it down for you with what I mean. Before I moved to the "city" and took this fancy job, I worked on the flight line. The day consisted of going to work…you'd be on shift for about 3.5 to 5 hours, depending on where you were, before the chow bus came by to your post. Someone would relieve you, and you would go to the bus to get your food. The chow runner would have some kind of main course, whatever the chow hall was having, which was some kind of mixed veggie sides and some kind of non-pork product (we have locals that work with us that we feed).

There was always some kind of soda or Gatorade, and if we were lucky, RIP (an energy drink). You got what you wanted then headed back to post. All that doesn't sound bad, unless the main course is ham, which I'm not a big fan of. And I just happened to be at one of the last posts to get food, and there was usually no non-pork products left, just mashed potatoes and mix veggie. Not much of a dinner, and that's where the let down comes. Don't worry there was usually cereal on the bus, so there was something for us to eat. That's at work and on flight chow relief. The same thing happens for breakfast, but usually no hot food, just cereal and fruit. The options varied on my days off.

Where I live now, there is a chow hall less than a quarter mile from me, so I'll stroll on over and that's when the fun begins. There are so many options, whether on the main line or short order. Short order has hamburgers and hot dogs, some kind of chicken, usually baby pizza and corn dogs. For the most part, that's an every night occurrence. The main line will have a beef or pork dish, then some chicken and some kind of side. It gets better! There is always a good salad bar with some good dark greens and veggies. Oh how I love my veggies! Then, what will be the death of me, the desserts. Cookies, cakes and ice cream. Now how am I supposed to say no to that? I try my best, but I have a sweet tooth for chocolate cookies and root beer. I picked that up during my last deployment.

That's just the chow hall that's closest to me. There's one that serves nothing but BBQ food…amazing! For breakfast, the chow halls have all the good fixings, with biscuits and gravy, eggs, bacon, French toast, oatmeal, and fresh fruit. Anything you could want, they have it.

Now I'm fat, full and happy, which makes for a great day!
