The Navy took action Tuesday and fired the party captain of the USS Enterprise, but why did it take so long?
By now you've probably seen the homemade video clips then second Officer Owen Honors made and appeared in four years ago, presumably to boost shipboard morale. They feature gay slurs, simulated masturbation and staged suggestive shower scenes.
They're supposed to be funny, but Animal House it ain't. Nor should it be.
He's not running a frat party. Until Tuesday he was the commander of a nuclear powered aircraft carrier. A commanding officer should handle himself with maturity and dignity. You don't want him to be Kittyhawk class clown.
Of equal concern is what took the Navy brass so long to step in and discipline this guy?
The Admiral of the fleet said Tuesday after viewing the videos he's lost confidence in Captain Honors' ability to lead effectively.
That's understandable, but these videos have been shown to thousands of Enterprise sailors. Are you telling me the brass didn't know anything about them until a Virginia newspaper got them? Doubtful.
