OKLAHOMA CITY -- Oklahoma's Special Olympics Winter Games kicked off Thursday with the aquatic events at the Oklahoma City Community College.

The games combine young and old with lots of encouragement along the way.

Former OU football coach Barry Switzer is now the honorary Special Olympics head coach, and he's cheered on the athletes for the past 30 years.

"Special Olympians aren't just young people. They're people my age that compete and prepare for that event every year, and it's the biggest thing in their life to be committed and have the willingness to prepare to be a Special Olympian and compete in these games," Switzer said.

Events will be held through Saturday at locations across the metro. Along with the swimming events, the 2,200 athletes will be competing in basketball, bowling, and volleyball.
