OKLAHOMA CITY – The Morrison School District has given their students a four day weekend and not because of the weather, but because of the flu.

The school district like, Binger Oney School District, has closed their school to a high number of students reporting flu-like symptoms. In a letter sent home to parents the Morrison School District reported 27 percent of their students are absent due to flu type symptoms.

The letter to parents read, "…by closing school we are hoping to reduce the number of students who may be exposed to the illness."

The school district also advised parents whose children may be sick to keep them at home when school resumes next week.

Because of the high number of students out, the school will also not have their boys' basketball team attending a tournament over the weekend.

"[Wednesday] we only had five to six kids on the team show up out of 12 to 20 who are on the team," said Jay Vernon, Morrison's Superintendent. "Plus, if we decided to play we would risk getting other schools sick as well."

The school's decision to cancel school comes on the heels of a state health department report that showed out of all flu cases reported within the past week almost one in four of them were people under the age of 18.
