Severe Weather Outlook: 5/24/2011

OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma -- The ingredients are coming together for a potential severe weather outbreak across portions of central and eastern Oklahoma this afternoon.

High levels of instability, wind shear, moisture and lift all appear to be present today; factors that often prelude tornado development. Indeed, atmospheric conditions will favor long-track, violent tornadoes today and tonight east of a line from Fairview, El Reno, Chickasha and Duncan.

This includes the Oklahoma City and Tulsa metro areas. Storm initiation along and west of Interstate-35 could be as early as 1-2 PM, affecting central Oklahoma between 3-9 PM.

Today is a day to remain calm, level-headed and weather aware. Review your tornado safety precautions now: Lowest level, interior room (bathroom, closet, laundry room) away from windows.

Put as many walls between you and the outside as possible. Make sure you are wearing pants, long-sleeve shirt, shoes and if possible a helmet to protect yourself from flying bits of glass and debris. Crouch down low, and cover your head.
