I dont understand the outrage over the NFLs decision to begin leveling suspensions for illegal hits. I keep hearing people say this somehow takes hard hitting and/or fun out of football. Why? It takes illegal hits out of football. Illegal hits were already illegal. Theyre just ramping up the punishment.
Football has continuously evolved since its invention for safety reasons. And it is greater today than it has ever been. Someone once decided they better start wearing helmets...then facemasks...then pads...then chopblocks were outlawed...and on and on.
Football players are instructed from pee-wee league to "see what you hit." "Dont lead with the crown of your helmet." Im sure the NFL will have the judgement to allow for accidental collisions. But intentional, illegal hits should be punished. We need fewer former football players with brain damage, ALS and post-concussion syndrome.
Nobodys saying quit hitting. Just quit breaking the rules. Whats wrong with that?
