Consumer Watch Team Busts Roofers Breaking The Law

NORMAN, Oklahoma -- Recent storms did a number on hundreds of roofs across the state and that means business is booming for roofers. There's a state law that went into effect in January 2011 meant to protect us against uninsured roofers and fly-by-night companies. It requires roofers to register with the Construction Industries Board before working in our state. While hundreds of roofing businesses have registered, I found some have not.

It didn't take me long to find signs in people's yards from roofing companies that are not registered. We brought it to their attention. Both told us they'll have their company registered by the end of the month.

One roofer all the way from Montana is working on a home in Norman, despite knowingly breaking the law.

He told me, "Someone told me about the registration deal, but I haven't had a chance to take a look at what it takes to keep it legit."

The Construction Industries Board can't catch them all, so it falls back on you to make sure you hire a legal company. First, ask the roofing contractor for his registration card. If they are registered, they should have the number on them. Be leery of businesses going door to door. Instead, you should take the initiative to choose the company you want to hire.
