PIEDMONT, Oklahoma -- Hundreds of people from across the Sooner state filled the room, their bellies, and opened their hearts to support Hank and Catherine Hamil, a Piedmont couple who lost two sons and a their home in the May tornadoes. Three-year-old Ryan Hamil was ripped from his mother's arms and 15-month old Cole died as results of injuries sustained in the storm.
"We just wanted to be here to show that we love them, not just as a caring Oklahoma, but as caring Piedmont and that we all pull together and help each other in need," Melissa Sheldon said.
Several businesses, restaurants and stores donated items for an auction. An anonymous donor presented the Hamil's with two full scholarships for their children to attend a four year college or university.
Organizer Frank Keeler said vendors, restaurants, musicians and business-owners were glad to donate and help. All proceeds will go to the family.
" It was never really about money. It is about wrapping our arms around this family. The money we are raising is just icing on the cake," Keeler said.
