OKLAHOMA CITY – Thousands of Oklahomans concerned about the debt ceiling debate and its impact on social security, military pay and the economy are phoning, faxing and e-mailing the state's Congressional delegation.

If the House, Senate and President Barack Obama fail to agree on a plan to raise the debt ceiling by Tuesday, August 2, the nation will default for the first time. Some financial analysts say not reaching a deal could lead to economic catastrophe. Interest rates could rise and the dollar could decline. The nation's triple-A credit rating could also be downgraded, which could lead to a steep stock market plunge.

President Obama has also indicated Social Security checks might not be mailed on time, but Republicans have called that a "scare tactic." One thing is certain: Without an increase in the debt limit, the federal government will not be able to pay all its bills next month.
