NORMAN, Oklahoma – Norman and Norman North each began their football seasons with their traditional showdown at Owen Field Thursday, and Norman pulled off a second-half comeback to win 28-21.

Norman North started the scoring with a 45-yard touchdown pass from Peyton Gavras to Corbin Cleveland, but Norman responded with a touchdown run by Donovan Roberts. The teams went into the locker room tied 7-7.

The Timberwolves retook the lead with a touchdown run by Gavras late in the third quarter, but Norman woke up after that. The Tigers rattled off 21 unanswered points, including a 52-yard touchdown run by Roberts that gave Norman its first lead of the night.

The Tigers' final touchdown gave them a 28-14 lead with slightly more than a minute left, seemingly putting the game out of reach. But Norman North would not go quietly.

The Timberwolves got a long return on the ensuing kickoff, and then scored on the next play to quickly cut the lead back to seven. But that was the closest they would come.

Norman now has beaten its cross-town rival in back-to-back season for the first time since 2005-06. The Tigers will move on to face Moore on Sept. 9, while the Timberwolves will play Del City the same night.
