NORMAN, Oklahoma – Police have identified the suspect who is accused of shooting a woman inside her home in Norman.
According to the police report, 23-year-old Allen Tyler Sykes has been arrested and booked into Cleveland County Detention Center on charges of First-Degree burglary without bond, shooting with intent to kill without bond, knowingly concealing stolen property with a $5,000 bond, and possession of a firearm after felony conviction with a $5,000 bond.
According to police, a 911 call was answered at 12:51 p.m. Monday. The caller said his wife, 69-year-old Glorina Vela had been shot.
Police responded to the home in the 1900 block of East Alameda and found the victim. Vela was taken to Norman Regional Hospital. She was treated and released after suffering a gunshot wound near her shoulder.
Vela's son says she was unloading groceries when she came face to face with an intruder in her kitchen. Vela says the intruder shot her and took off.
Two nearby schools, Kennedy Elementary School and Irving Middle School, were placed on lock-down as a safety precaution.
After a long foot pursuit, police caught Sykes and took him into custody without incident.
The case is still under investigation.
