Last night there was a beautiful light show from Northern Lights, seen as far south as Georgia.  A strong geomagnetic storm is in progress, and as a result, many got to see the green and red glow of the Aurora Borealis.

A geomagnetic storm is a disturbance in the geomagnetic field caused by gusts in the solar wind that blows by Earth.  The Northern Lights occur when the solar wind interacts with the Earth's magnetic field.

There were many across the US that were unable to see the phenomenon because of weather.  Rain showers and storms blocked the viewing for many states in the Upper Midwest.  Also, cloudy conditions and rain showers blocked viewing for parts of the northeast.

With high pressure resulting in clear skies, many in the southeast were able to view the light show!  Some residents of Oklahoma were able to see a faint red hue from the northern lights.  News 9 Meteorologist Stephanie Malone
