Oklahoma State golfer, and former U.S. Amateur Champion, Peter Uihlein announced Monday he will turn pro and will debut in late January in the Abu Dhabi Championship.

Uihlein signed with Chubby Chandler of British-based International Sports Media and will play on a sponsor exemption. He officially turns pro on Jan. 1, 2012.

"I want to thank everybody at Oklahoma State who has supported the team and myself over the years. I love the people at OSU and enjoyed my time there," Uihlein said. "The standards have been set high by all of the great OSU alums and I hope I represented myself well. I will be a Cowboy for life."

The senior from Orlando, Florida could have returned to Oklahoma State for his final semester of eligibility, but decided that he wanted a full year to start the new chapter in his playing career.

"I will always appreciate what Peter did to add to our history. He worked hard every day and gave us everything he had," OSU head coach Mike McGraw said. "I look forward to watching his professional career unfold."

According to the Associated press, Uihlein's plan is to primarily play in Europe in 2012 in regular events and Challenge tour events to try to earn full-time status.

At the collegiate level, Uihlein finished his career as one of the most decorated players in Oklahoma State history. He was a two-time U.S. Walker Cup participant, and became the fourth Cowboy to win the United States Amateur Championship. He also won the Havemeyer Trophy in 2010 at Chambers Bay in University Place, Wash. That same year, he also received the Mark H. McCormack Medal, which is presented by The R&A to the top-ranked golfer in the World Amateur Golf Ranking at the end of the amateur season.

In 2011, Uihlein advanced to the event's quarterfinal round for the third-straight year, making him the first player since Tiger Woods to do so.

Uihlein was twice he was named a first-team All-American and had six victories to his credit.

Uihlein's debut will come in the Abu Dhabi Championship that runs from Jan 26-29.
