I just got back from Phoenix and the Fiesta Bowl. It was a great experience except for one thing--the Stanford band.
The Stanford band prides itself on being irreverent.
They can wear basically whatever they want to or don't want to.
And they revel in mocking their opponents.
Their announcer apparently mocked Oklahoma, but I was down on the field and couldn't understand a word of it.
They also tried to drown out the awards ceremony for OSU after the game.
I was busy laughing at them, not with them.
The members of the Stanford Band are trying too hard to be non-conformist.
They're not funny, they've become a caricature of what they think they are and their act is stupid and juvenile.
Subtlety is the key to the best humor, and their act is about as subtle as a whoopee cushion.
Surprising too, because most of the Stanford alums I met out there were quite nice, and I'm sure most of them are embarrassed by their student-led band.
You know some of the band members are sitting around the coffee shops in Palo Alto chatting about how the dumb Okies just don't get it.
Oh, we get it. It's just not funny or clever.
I've never seen people try so hard to look like they're not trying.
