Building Collapse Victims May Have Been After Copper

Police and firefighters rushed to rescue a metro couple after a wall collapsed on them early Friday morning.

The couple was trapped around one o'clock in a building undergoing renovations at N.W. 12th and Penn.

Police were at first led to believe the couple was there doing work. They now believe the couple may have been there to steal copper.

"It was like chaos out here with the many fire trucks and ambulances and police cars," Alibi's Bar Manager Krystal Campbell said.

Police fielded a 911 call about a possible ceiling collapse in a store at 1210 N. Penn around one a.m.

911 caller: "Please! Please! We're going to die!"

911 caller: "Please! Please! I can't feel my legs! Can you please hurry!"

Sergeant Jennifer Wardlow of the Oklahoma City Police Department said, "A large cement wall had actually fallen on these people,"

It took eight police officers and firefighters to pull them out.

"It seemed a little odd at first. It seemed like they were working, that they were actually there putting up doors," Campbell said.

But it turns out police think the couple may have been trying to steal copper.

"I believe you reap what you sow, and that if they wouldn't have been there, it wouldn't have happened," Campbell said. "I don't want to say it's justified, but maybe a little bit of poetic justice."

The couple was taken to the hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The father of the man who was trapped says his son was there to see a friend and when they walked out of the building the wall collapsed.

No arrests have been made, but police say the investigation is not over.
