Putnam City elementary students get a reminder in stranger danger Friday afternoon.

This comes after a 4th grade Western Oaks Elementary student told Bethany police a man grabbed her as she was walking home from school.

The girl told police she screamed and ran to tell a crossing guard who called 911.

School officials said she did the right thing.

Western Oaks Elementary held an assembly to remind students how to react if they are approached by a stranger.

"It's OK, in fact, you should fight back. Make a scene, make noise, struggle. People need to hear there is a problem," said district spokesperson Steve Lindley.

Police say the man ran into apartments at N.W. 23rd and Wilburn Avenue. The same apartments are where many Western Oaks Elementary students live.

Alicia Rucker is not letting her son out of her sight. She plans to walk with him every day.

"Probably in middle school, I will still be making him walk with me."

Bethany police hope to develop a sketch of the suspect but say the young victim is still very shaken up. She told police all she remembered about the suspect was that he was wearing a brown hoodie.
