One elementary school in Cushing is blending fun and fitness to create perfect harmony. And it's not just helping the students. It has benefits for the whole community.

Harmony is one of 50 schools in the state that is a part of Schools for Healthy Lifestyles, a program emphasizing fitness and nutrition for students, teachers, and the community. Something Nancy Dowell says has big benefits.

"I see more confidence in my students," said Nancy Dowell, Harmony School Principal. "The increase in attendance, the increase in learning capabilities, the positive attitudes."

Along with those benefits, the kids have a lot of fun. They have Fitness Fridays, a frenzy-filled fitness full of dance and fun. Even the community gets involved.

"Sometimes firemen, sometimes policemen, sometimes oilfield workers coming and dancing and having a great time with us," Dowell said.

The teachers also have their own special workout.

"It's called the Brazilian butt lift. We don't go around announcing that to the kids ‘cause they would giggle," Dowell said.

And giggle they do, especially during their favorite time of day. High energy and high fives all around for these kiddos for getting fit and having fun while doing it.

Harmony is the only school in Cushing that's a part of Schools for Healthy Lifestyles. They are reaching out to other schools in the area to help them create similar fitness programs.
