Oklahoma State snapped a four-match winless streak Sunday afternoon with a 3-1 victory against Milwaukee at Engelmann Stadium.
With the victory, the Cowgirls improved to 11-4-3. The win was their first since beating Iowa State on Sept. 28 as OSU had gone 0-1-3 since that contest.
After controlling the ball at the offensive end throughout much of the opening half, the Cowgirls finally got on the scoreboard in the 37th minute. And it would be freshman Kelsey Bass recording the first goal of her career as she bent in a corner kick off the hand of UWM goalie Jamie Forbes.
The Panthers nearly recorded the equalizer just over a minute later, but a 10-yard shot by Sammy Vovos sailed a few feet wide.
OSU would take a 2-0 lead into intermission when Megan Marchesano netted her team-leading 11th goal just 37 seconds before the halftime whistle. The senior forward dribbled past the defense to create a one-vs.-one opportunity with Forbes, then sent a shot to the far post for the score.
The lead quickly increased in the second half, with the Cowgirls taking advantage of a foul deep in UWM's end of the field in the 50th minute. From just outside the right side of the 18-yard box, Bass delivered a ball that Carson Michalowski headed to the far post to give OSU a 3-0 advantage. The goal was Michalowski's second of the season.
UWM (5-8-1) had one of its few scoring opportunities early in the second half. Off a free kick from 40 yards, Helen Steinhauser blasted a shot that Franch leapt to save over the crossbar.
The Panthers were able to avoid the shutout, however, when Vovos scored at the 78:58 mark, taking a pass from Sara Stern and chipping the ball over Franch after she failed to win it in the box.
OSU closes out the regular season Friday in Lubbock, Texas, when the Cowgirls take on Texas Tech at 7 p.m. The game will be televised live by Fox Soccer.
