A Tulsa man convicted last year in the 2010 death of teenager at the Apache Manor apartment complex is dead.

The Oklahoma Department of Corrections says Deshawn Reed, 23, who was housed at the Mack Alford Correctional Center in Stringtown was stabbed to death during an assault in a cell Thursday morning.

Reed was serving a 22-year sentence for manslaughter in connection with the death of 19-year-old Vandel Nelson.

Prison officials say five prisoners were involved in the incident. "The assault involved three attackers and two victims," warden assistant Trent Griffin said.

Reed was taken to a hospital in Coalgate where he was pronounced dead. The other victim, who was not identified, suffered only minor injuries.

Griffin says homemade knives were used in the assault and the prison has been placed on lockdown status until further notice.

Stringtown is located in Atoka County.
