We are just two days away from the most active deer hunting day in Oklahoma. Hunters all across the state are dusting off their blaze orange, brushing up on new regulations, spending countless hours scouting out the perfect spot, hanging stands, and sighting in their guns. November 17th is opening day of rifle season! Last year almost 153,000 Oklahoma hunters took part in the season. For many deer hunters, this is the only season they go out. If you're like me, and you've been hunting since October 1st, you know how much of an increase in hunters you see this time of year. This year's rifle season, as usual, is coinciding with the peak of the rut, or deer breeding season. According the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, field reports show the time is now for the bucks to be twitterpated, forcing them to let down their guard. This is also the time of year when all drivers need to be on alert. Bucks chasing does cause the number of deer-car collisions to really ramp up.
So what's the forecast looking like this weekend? We'll have cold mornings and cool afternoons. Winds will be a little on the strong side out of the south and skies will be partly cloudy. We could see a stray shower or two Sunday, but that chance is less than 20%. Check out the weather curve to the right. This is for the center of the state, so temps and times will vary depending on where you are. Overall excellent hunting conditions! Sunrise Saturday is at 7:07 am and sets at 5:23 PM. Sunday sunrise is at 7:08 am and sets at 5:22 PM. If you bag one this weekend make sure you tag me in the pics also post pics and details on the Hook and Hunt facebook page. Also make sure you listen to the Hook and Hunt radio show Saturday mornings from 5 to 7 am. There you'll hear a complete up-to-date forecast from Matt Mahler or myself, that is geared towards the sportsman or woman.
