One of Oklahoma's Own is proving it takes more than a disability to ruin your spirit and your drive to be successful.

Monique Burkland crushed her left foot during a forklift accident after she graduated from high school five years ago. Doctors tried to save her leg, but ultimately had to amputate from the knee down.

Monique, who's from Ardmore, was a well-rounded athlete. She says it was tough figuring out her prosthetic in the beginning but she pushed herself to become better. That led to trying out and making the U.S. Sitting Volleyball team. That then led to trips around the world and eventually a silver medal at the 2012 Paralympics in London.

"I can always be worse," Monique said during a news conference on Tuesday. "You're still alive. It's just another obstacle you have to get through and you will learn how to do everything you used to do, just in a different way."

Monique says her team was disappointed they only won silver.
