The Oklahoma Panhandle State University men's basketball team (4-7) played a final game prior to the holiday break on Monday night at home against the Bethel College Threshers (2-12) from North Newton, Kan. and it seemed the visitors couldn't miss a shot in the first half while the Aggies struggled to make even a free throw.
OPSU shot 43.6 percent from the field, going 0-7 from outside and making only three of five free throws while Bethel shot 66.7 percent total, 54.5 percent from outside and 85.7 percent from the charity line. As a result, the Aggies were down 52-37 at the half. The men took the floor for the second half and although they were down by 18 with 11 minutes remaining, they finally started to score and a Damar Hill trey got the Aggies to within four points. In the final five minutes of the game, the Threshers put it away by capitalizing on Aggie fouls, making 15 complimentary points.
The next OPSU games are scheduled for Dec. 29 against West Texas A&M Univ. at the First United Bank Center in Canyon. The women tip off at 4 p.m. and the men's game follows at approximately 6 p.m.
Coca Heartland Co-Player of the Week
Whitley Coca has been named the Heartland Conference Co-Player of the Week after averaging 19.5 points, seven rebounds and 5.5 assists over two games last week.
The 5'5 senior point guard from Cimarron, N.M. led all scorers in the win against Central Christian with 23 and earned a perfect 5-5 at the free throw line. In the game against Ft. Hays State, she not only led her team in points, she took down eight defensive rebounds. In addition, Coca currently leads the Conference in assists, averaging 4.9 per game and is third in overall scoring, averaging 16.9 points per game.
