Marcus Smart's running bank shot with 3.1 seconds left broke a 76-76 tie and gave Oklahoma State a huge 78-76 victory over Iowa State Wednesday night in Stillwater.
Smart finished with 21 points on 9-15 shooting. He also dished out seven assists and grabbed six rebounds. Le'Bryan Nash finished with 18 points for the Cowboys while Phil Forte added 17 points and four steals off the OSU bench.
Michael Cobbins and Markel Brown gave the Cowboys good minutes as well. Cobbins scored 10 points on 4-7 shooting and grabbing six boards while Brown chipped in 12 points and eight rebounds.
Iowa State kept the game tight due to its incredible 3-point shooting. The Cyclones shot 13-24 (54.2 percent) from downtown while OSU hit six of its 16 3-point attempts. ISU also outrebounded the Pokes 33-28 and dished out 17 assists to OSU's 12.
Things weren't looking good for OSU when Chris Babb's 3-pointer put the Cyclones up 53-44 with 16:24 to play in the second half, but the Pokes quickly answered with an 11-0 run to jump right back on top.
ISU regained the lead and had a 76-72 advantage with less than two minutes to play, but free throws by Forte and Michael Cobbins tied the game and set things up for Smart.
Babb led the way for ISU with 19 points on 7-10 shooting. Babb nailed 5-6 from 3-point range and grabbed five boards. Georges Niang added 16 points on 6-7 from the field while snagging eight rebounds for the Cyclones. ISU was hurt by its 17 turnovers, nine of which were Oklahoma State steals.
Oklahoma State (14-5, 4-3) outscored ISU 41-35 in the second half to secure the victory. The Cowboys improved to 4-0 at home in Big 12-play and will travel to Lawrence to face the Kansas Jayhawks Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
Iowa State (14-6, 4-3) hosts Baylor on Saturday in Ames.
