A Millwood High school student who suffered an asthma attack before a basketball game died Friday morning.
According to family, the 15-year-old passed out here on the sidewalk outside the Millwood Fieldhouse after suffering the attack. She was unresponsive when paramedics arrived and never regained consciousness.
Family will remember Karisma Taylor as a quiet teenager, who kept to herself, except when she was around her close friends or large family.
"Just hug and kiss your kids extra tight tonight because there's two parents who won't ever get to kiss theirs ever again, it's really sad and unfortunate," Taylor's aunt Alfreda Smith said.
On Monday evening before a basketball game at the Millwood gym, Karisma's family says when Karisma told her coach she couldn't breathe, she was told to go outside and get some air.
That's when she passed out on the sidewalk.
Karisma would be without oxygen for several minutes causing enough brain damage that she would never recover.
"When she told her coach she can't breathe, I feel like she could have called 911," Smith said.
The school says it is investigating, and can't comment on the events. But Karisma's family says they at least hope anyone who sees this will realize the seriousness of asthma.
"I pray and hope that something can be put in place that this won't happen anymore," Smith said.
