A man has been charged with DUI after he crashed into another vehicle in northwest Oklahoma City on Sunday, February 3, injuring himself and a woman inside the other car.
According to police, officers responded the crash at 5:45 p.m. Sunday at Hefner Road and Council Road.
The suspect, later identified as 49-year-old Joseph Whitaker, was sitting in his Red Camaro when officers arrived. An officer said he could smell a strong odor of alcoholic beverage on Whitaker. Emergency crews had to use the Jaws of Life to extract Whitaker from his car.
A woman in the vehicle that was struck by Whitaker was also stuck in her car. She was taken to the hospital in an unknown condition.
Officers placed Whitaker under arrest. He was taken to the hospital to be checked out. He suffered internal bleeding, according to police.
Whitaker had to undergo surgery. However, out of custody, he has been charged with a felony count of driving under the influence of alcohol with great bodily injury, DUI, speeding, reckless driving, and disregarding a signal light.
