A brother and sister who went on a kayak ride Friday afternoon got more than they bargained for.
Ski Island is northwest of Lake Hefner, and is governed by the Ski Island Homes Association. They forbid any watercraft on the water unless it is registered with the Association.
Safety Committee Director David Bonham says he took kayaks away from 15-year-old Pierce Rosengren and his 12-year-old sister Mallory. He says the kids didn't have the proper registration for their kayaks, they were uncooperative, and Pierce Rosengren used crude language.
Bonham says it's true he left the teens stranded on "Picnic Island," when he took their kayaks. But he did so only after they refused to come with him to shore. Bonham says he also called authorities to come get the teens after he left them.
The kids' mother, Sidney, didn't like the way it was handled.
"I'm upset about it. If they wouldn't have had a cellphone, I wouldn't have known where to look for them," She said.
Sidney Rosengren says she expects her children to get tickets for trespassing. Bonham says people just need to follow the rules.
