There's a new way to find out where you can carry your gun inside local businesses. A new app for your smartphone shows you where you can carry your gun.
Ever since open carry went into effect in Oklahoma, we've seen signs go up across the metro indicating whether guns are allowed.
But with the new Gun Free Zone app, you can find out a business's policy before you get there.
"I feel safer in a gun free zone, so I'm going to go into your theater as opposed to the one down the street, that's the real immediate benefit to the app right now," app creator John Peden said.
John Peden is a gun rights advocate. He and his business partner, Karl Hale, came up with the Gun Free Zone app.
It's a free download on your smartphone, allowing users to find out which businesses are open carry friendly or gun-free.
"They can support stores that support their views on the second amendment," Peden said.
When you open the Gun Free Zone App, your phone uses GPS to find your location on a Google map.
It also lists the nearest 20 businesses. The app is user-based, relying on consumers to tag local businesses and their policies.
On the left-hand side, business names are listed, and on the right-hand side, there's a circle indicating that business's policy.
Red means someone has marked it as a gun free zone. Green indicates it's been marked as a gun friendly zone. Blue means it hasn't been marked yet, and business owners can contact the app company themselves if they want to lock in their own policy.
"This way the business owners will be able to police their own location," Peden said.
The Gun Free Zone App has been up and running for about a month. Again, it's free to download.
So far, there are nearly 40,000 locations that have been marked.
Creators behind the app say they plan to add more features like crime data over the next several months.
