Because of what happened in Boston, security at the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon was at an all-time high.

Thousands of runners and spectators showed up for today's event. And among them, an impressive number of law enforcement officers on the ground and in the air; all here protecting the people.

Local, county, state and federal officers swarmed downtown including bomb squad techs and K9 units looking around every alley and corner, determined to keep this a peaceful event.

It was a promise by organizers and good news for volunteers like Wendi Shipp, who worked the area near the Finish Line. And like so many others, put on red socks to support the victims of the Boston bombings.

"Everyone is having a great time. There is probably a little bit of mixture, but no one is letting on that there is any apprehension whatsoever," said Wendi Shipp.

This year, participants were urged to keep backpacks and duffle bags at home and to treat the area like an airport; meaning if you see something or someone unusual, speak up. The Russell family from Yukon is here supporting family members who are running. They say security is intense and welcoming.

"It's amazing how Oklahoma City pulls together in times like this," said Buzzy Russell.

"We're just strong people in Oklahoma. We fight back. We don't let things get the best of us," said Sue Russell.

First responders came from all around the state to help out with this year's race.
