Norman Police Release Name Of Suspect Shot By Officer

Richard Darwin Eaton, 44, is listed in stable condition at OU Medical Center, after being shot by a Norman police officer.

Investigators have identified the man shot Wednesday by a Norman police officer.

Richard Darwin Eaton, 44, is listed in stable condition at OU Medical Center. Eaton suffered gunshot wounds after being shot by the officer around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Sinclair station at Main and Hal Muldrow.

Police say the situation began when the Eaton allegedly walked into a nearby Wendy's restaurant and hit a female employee. Police say Eaton also had a knife and advanced toward the officer, refusing to drop the weapon when ordered. The officer pulled her weapon and fired several shots, striking Eaton.

The police officer involved in Eaton's shooting is on administrative leave in accordance with standard department policy, which also prevents the release of the officer's name for seventy-two hours.

Eaton is in police custody with formal charges pending.
