Senior pitcher Michelle Gascoigne and sophomore infielder Jessica Vest were named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-District 7 Softball Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
The honors recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
An elementary education major, Gascoigne has enjoyed had a breakthrough senior season. Named as one of the 25 finalists for the 2013 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year, Gascoigne leads the nation with a 0.93 earned run average, ranks fourth with 11.0 strikeouts per seven innings and is 10th with 3.99 hits allowed per seven innings. She is 16-2 on the season with 177 strikeouts in 112.1 innings pitched over 26 appearances this season.
Vest has played in 42 of 46 games this season with 31 starts at shortstop and one at second base. A pre-nursing major, she is hitting .308 on the year with three home runs and 14 runs batted in and boasts an on-base percentage of .406 and slugging mark of .731. Vest was named the Big 12 Player of the Week on April 2 after hitting two home runs and driving in seven runs in a doubleheader sweep of Wichita State.
Gascoigne and Vest represent the 10th and 11th different Sooners to be named Academic All-District, while OU players have tallied 14 total accolades from CoSIDA.
This is just the third time that multiple Sooners have been recognized in the same season and the first since 2007 when Norrelle Dickson and Jamie Fox accomplished the feat.
First-team Academic All-District honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second - and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
