Oklahoma State's Gage Green has been named the Big 12 Conference Player of the Week for games played May 6-12, it was announced today by the league office.
Green led OSU to a Bedlam Series win over 13th-ranked Oklahoma last weekend as the sophomore was 7-for-10 at the plate against the Sooners. He scored three runs, collected two doubles and two RBIs and turned in a .900 slugging percentage.
In Friday's series opener in Tulsa, Green tied a career high with three hits in a 3-for-4 performance, and his two-out, RBI single in the top of the eighth inning brought home the winning run in a 4-3 victory. Green also started at catcher in the game in place of an injured Victor Romero, marking just the fourth start behind the plate for a player who typically plays left field.
On Saturday, Green was 1-for-2 and played a pivotal role in helping OSU seal a series-clinching win late in the contest. With OSU leading 3-2, Green led off the top of the eighth with a double and advanced to third on an error. Then, with two outs, Green stole home to push the Cowboys' lead to two in a game OSU eventually won 4-3.
Green closed out the Bedlam Series with another 3-for-4 effort and added an RBI in a one-run loss.
With his hot-hitting weekend, Green raised his batting average 31 points to .307, third highest on the Cowboys, and is now OSU's top hitter in Big 12 play at .345.
OSU has now had a player honored with a Big 12 weekly award each of the last four weeks and six times this season. Last week, Mark Robinette was the league's Pitcher of the Week and earning accolades for the Cowboys prior to that were Tyler Nurdin (Newcomer of the Week on April 29), Robbie Rea (Player of the Week on April 22), Zach Fish (Player of the Week on March 19) and Tanner Krietemeier (Newcomer of the Week on Feb. 18).
