Allegations of sex and inappropriate text messages have been leveled against a middle school teacher in Washington, Okla. Now McClain County Sheriff's deputies and agents with the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation are investigating.
Washington Public Schools has suspended the teacher with pay. Authorities have not yet arrested or charged the teacher, which is why News 9 is not reporting her name. But in the small town of Washington, students say news travels fast, and just about everyone knows the story.
"Nothing really happens in the little podunk town of Washington," Washington junior, Jamie Ferguson said.
Parents were shocked to learn of an alleged sex scandal between a female teacher and a 15-year-old male student.
"It's pretty disgusting … if it's true," concerned mom Kristi Cantu said.
Deputies say someone told school district officials the teacher had sex with the boy. Others say the two sent racy photos to each other via text messaging. Washington Public Schools says there was social media interaction between the teacher and the child.
The teacher's phone was in the hands of the McClain County Sheriff's Office as of Wednesday.
"We're in the process at this time of sending [the devices] to OSBI Forensics to see exactly what was on them," McClain County Sheriff Don Hewett said. "Basically, we won't know anything until we get the results."
Students News 9 spoke with say they believe the allegations.
"She was a little, you know, bubbly and open, but she was a nice person," Ferguson said.
Deputies have talked with the teacher, and Hewett says school officials did exactly what they were expected to do in this situation.
Hewett is unsure how long it will take the OSBI to perform forensic testing on the teacher's cell phone.
