A metro charter school is shutting its doors amid controversy. The Oklahoma City Board of Education voted to terminate a contract with the Marcus Garvey Learning Center, citing poor academic performance and mismanaged funds.

Parents and grandparents of students here at Marcus Garvey Leadership Charter School are confused by the closing of the school. They say the kids are getting the bad deal when it was the administration that screwed up so bad.

Verna Cole has sent her grandkids to Marcus Garvey since it opened. She says it's been good for her family.

"The teachers were doing their jobs. The students were doing what they were supposed to do," said Cole.

Cole says the school has been a useful tool to get families involved in their community.

"It was convenient and plus it was a learning experience for the parents as well as the children because we had the chance to participate in things that went on in the school," said Cole.

"They wanted us to volunteer and then they had this program that they had like on Tuesday nights that the families could come here together, teaching the parents how to raise your children."

The district says after the board voted to shut the school down saying in part:

"Each OKCPS charter school leadership is given flexibility to create opportunities that promote high academic performance. When comparing other district charter schools and Marcus Garvey Leadership Charter; there is a substantial difference in student performance."

Now Cole wonders what's next for the students. According to the statement released by Oklahoma City Public Schools, students that are currently enrolled at Marcus Garvey will be transferred into public schools in their areas.
