The Logan County Sheriff's Office requested OSBI assistance with a reported home invasion robbery and homicide that occurred in Crescent, Wednesday afternoon.

A 911 call was made from 560 Ruth Lane in Crescent at 6:15 p.m. When deputies arrived at the home, they found 49-year-old Monica Schemm dead inside her bedroom. Her hands were bound with zip ties and a plastic bag was secured around her head with duct tape.

Her husband, 52-year-old Mark Alan Schemm, had been bound with zip ties and a plastic bag placed around his head. He was able to create a hole in the bag by biting it. Their son, who also lived at the home, found the scene when he returned from work and made the emergency call.

OSBI agents took Mark Schemm to the sheriff's office to interview him. Initially, Schemm told agents that two Hispanic males had broken into the home, tied up him and his wife, put plastic bags over their heads, and robbed them.

Schemm said he was able to puncture the plastic bag to breathe. Later in the evening, Schemm admitted to killing his wife and fabricating the home invasion story. Schemm said his wife suffered from a brain tumor and fall that had left her severely handicapped. He said his wife repeatedly asked him to kill her as her attempts to commit suicide were futile.

Agents found jewelry reported to have been stolen in the home invasion and items used in the crime at a location disclosed by Schemm.

After the interview and admission, OSBI agents arrested Schemm for First-Degree Murder. He was booked into the Logan County Jail.
