Pauls Valley hosted the 55th annual World Watermelon Seed Spitting Championship Thursday night.

It's been a July 4 tradition since 1957. The world record was set in 1989, when a Chicago man launched on nearly 67 feet.

On Thursday night, the winning spit came from Pauls Valley resident Darren Jennings.  He fired one just over 34 feet.

Taylor Anderson drove down from Oklahoma City to spit some seeds.

"What's better, watermelon or ice cream," I asked.

"Watermelon," she said. "But you have to have salt."
