The Oklahoma County Health Department is offering immunizations for students who are getting ready for the 2013-2014 school year.

Most children entering kindergarten will need the following required vaccines:

• Second dose of MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine)

• 4th dose of polio

• 5th dose of DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis vaccines)

• 2nd dose of Varicella (recommended)

Students entering 7th grade are required to have a Tdap booster (Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis). Health officials also encourages parents to consider the following two vaccines for their preteens and teens:

• HPV (human papillomavirus virus vaccine)

• MCV4 (meningococcal virus vaccine)

According to the health department, parents and guardians must have a copy of a child's shot records. If a shot record has been lost, contact all of the child's previous health care providers or check with your local county health department. If your child received vaccines in another state, check that state's immunization websites for information on the state immunization registry.

"There are many opportunities for receiving back-to-school immunizations," said Oklahoma County Immunization Coalition Director Ellen Pogemiller. "Vaccines are available at doctor's offices, pharmacies, health departments, and nonprofits like the Oklahoma Caring Van Program. The Oklahoma County Immunization Coalition has a weekly schedule on our website and we will also use social media to update immunization sites daily."

Parents or guardians should bring current shot record to immunization sites. Appointments are not necessary.

The Oklahoma Caring Van and the Oklahoma City-County Health Department provides services to children who are Medicaid eligible, uninsured, and Native American.
