Their dream Make-A-Wish trip turns into a nightmare. A metro family is burglarized while on a trip for their 5-year-old with brain cancer.
It was little Elijah's wish: to ride Thomas the Train. In November, doctors removed a tumor the size of a lemon at the base of his spine. He's had to undergo chemo and radiation for the past six weeks.
So at the end of June, Make-a-Wish sent the entire family to Lancaster, Penn., but while they were on the trip, someone broke into their apartment and stole televisions and video games.
Now their landlord has not only refused to fix the broken window that the thieves came in through, but he won't fix their air conditioner that's been on the fritz for weeks.
"We got back to a hot house with no air conditioner or nothing," said Elijah's mother, Myeasha Williams.
Williams bought window units and fans with her own money, but it means her family has to stay confined basically to one room. And she says her calls to her landlord now go unanswered.
"We don't deserve this and my son doesn't deserve it either, he's fighting for his life and has to be sitting up in this house sweating," said Williams with tears welling up in her eyes. "You know he's five years old."
News 9 was able to get a hold of the property manager who said he sent someone out to fix the air conditioner, and that the owner of the property lives in Texas and says he doesn't have the money to fix anything.
But that property manager said Myeasha wouldn't have to pay rent this month and he would let her out of her lease. The family still however has to find the money to move.
