Seniors Damien Williams and Jeremy Smith were named to the Doak Walker watch list on Thursday. The award goes out to the top running back in college football.
Williams was a pleasant surprise in a crowded Sooner backfield a year ago. He ascended to the starting role early and, despite battling injuries throughout the season, tallied 946 yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground and another 320 yards receiving.
For the past two seasons, Smith has been "bash" to Joseph Randle's "dash," but has never reached 100 carries in season. Now that Randle is a Dallas Cowboy, Smith is the clear No.1 back for the first time. Like Williams, Smith also fought nagging injuries throughout 2012 but still managed to score eight touchdowns and rush for 371 yards.
Seven other Big 12 running backs made the list as well: BJ Catalon (TCU), Waymon James (TCU), John Hubert (KSU), Lache Seastrunk (BU), Glasco Martin (BU), James Sims (KU) and James White (ISU).
Wisconsin's Montee Ball won the award last year. The last player from the Big 12 to win the award was Texas' Cedric Benson.
